Everybody has heard of Karate, Kung Fu, Judo and other styles of Martial Arts (self
defense) but how many of you have heard of Capoeira? Undoubtedly you have seen
it in the movies but did not know it. The first time I saw Capoeira I was impressed
and thought to myself I have never seen this style of Martial Arts before! What part of
China or Asia did that come from, only to find out later it came from African slaves in
Brazil over 300 years ago. They did not want their white slave masters to know what
they were up to, so the art was disguised as a dance, that is why Capoeira is
performed to music and contact is not made while in training. Check out the videos

from the region of Bahia which is located in the north and is said to be
the most African state in Brazil, South America. Then there is the
Angola style which is the original style and performed slower and
closer to the ground. Below you will see a simple demonstration.

Remember this style of martial arts (self defense) was
developed right in front of the slave master's face without them
knowing what was going on! To the untrained eye Capoeira
looks more like a lot of twist and turns with no clear winner or
loser, but once you become experienced you will know who won
and who lost!
